William Auerbach collection, circa 1941-1945, undated.

The collection primarily consists of letters from William Auerbach to his girlfriend (later wife) Tess Kasper, from October to December 1945 while he was in China, then India, and finally on his way home to the United States (U.S.). Auerbach wrote frequently to Tess Kasper, often with humor, about observations and his work in the Far East. The collection includes the original letters as well as transcripts by Auerbach' daughter. Also included are photocopied personnel papers, a letter from Minnie Shlosh (Auerbach' sister) to Kasper, and a photograph of Auerbach during World War II.

Tech 5 William Auerbach was born on 14 August 1914. He attended Harvard Law School and was working as a general practice attorney in New York City when he enlisted in the U.S. Army on 23 June 1943. Auerbach completed antiaircraft artillery basic training and served as a cryptanalysis technician, and then as a technical writer with the Research and Analysis Branch, Office of Strategic Services (OSS).
